Muting and filtering

Words, topics and accounts can be removed from every feed view outright, without blocking anyone.

Muted words and phrases

Settings, then Muted. Add any word or phrase, and it is filtered out of every feed view until you remove it. Nobody is told.

Muted topics

The same screen carries a topic hierarchy: ten categories opening into 49 sub-topics. Muting a category mutes everything under it. Posts are matched against their classified topic, so a post does not need to use a particular word to be caught.

Muted, blocked and restricted accounts

Mute
You stop seeing their posts. They are not told, and they can still follow you and see yours.
Restrict
Their replies to you are limited in reach, and their interactions are held quietly. Useful when blocking would cause a scene.
Block
Mutual. They cannot see your posts, follow you, or message you.

Each has its own list in Settings, under Privacy and People, and each list can be managed in one place.

What muting does not touch

Muting is a feed and notification control. It does not remove a post from Surf, does not affect the author's account, and does not apply retroactively to what you have already been shown.
