The map
Posts placed by location and people near you, both of which require you to share your location first.
The map shows two things: posts that were placed at a location, and accounts that are near you.

Your location
The map asks your browser for your location, which means your browser asks you first and you can refuse. Nothing on this page works until you allow it, and none of it is on by default.
When you do allow it, your most recent position is stored on your account so that people nearby can find you the same way you found them. It is a stored last position rather than continuous tracking.
If you would rather not appear, do not grant the location permission, and turn off Suggest account to others to stay out of suggestions generally.
